Introduction

The Agnipath Scheme, also known as the Agneepath Scheme (Hindi: Agnīpath Yojanā"), is a recruitment initiative introduced by the Government of India on June 14, 2022, and implemented in September 2022. It is designed to enlist soldiers below the rank of commissioned officers into the three branches of the armed forces for a fixed term of four years. Those enlisted under this scheme are referred to as Agniveers, a newly established military rank.

The scheme has sparked criticism due to its lack of prior consultation and public discussion. Unlike the traditional system, this scheme omits longer service periods, pensions, and other benefits previously available. Various opposition parties in India have raised concerns about the potential implications of the scheme and have called for it to be suspended until a thorough discussion takes place in Parliament.
